Healthy Through the Holidays

The holidays are just around the corner which means celebrations filled with family, food, and fun. For those with kidney disease and hypertension, it is important to remain aware of what and how much is being consumed. Below are some recipes and recommendations to help you stay healthy through the holidays.

Helpful Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are a hectic time. We've compiled some helpful tips to get you through the holiday season and keep your kidneys safe.

Your Devices are Travel Friendly!

Take your devices with you when you travel this holiday season. Wherever cell phones work, your device will work as well.

course

Be Mindful of the Foods you Eat

Moderation is key!
Nutrition tracking apps, like MyFitnessPal, can help you keep
track of your nutrient intake while traveling.

Limit sodium intake: table salt (sodium chloride) is usually not the culprit. Processed foods will contain more sodium due to preservatives. Replace salt with other dried or fresh herbs, spices, and vegetables (garlic or ginger).

Be Prepared: Bring Back-ups

Request refills of medications at least two weeks in advance to account for holiday pharmacy hours and office closures. Appointments may be required for refills.

Take at least one week of extra medications and extra
batteries or your charger with you. If you have emergency
anti-hypertensive medications or diuretics, take the entire
bottle when traveling.
