Back to the Basics

Back to the Basics

May 2025

This month we have some exciting things to cover. Let's go back to the basics and talk about what all  our kidneys do and how they help regulate our blood  pressure. We are also very excited to introduce Stacie as our new Patient Care Coordinator.

What do the Kidneys do?

Which of these functions surpised you?

Which would you like to know more about?

The kidneys have 7 main functions:

1. Filter waste from blood

2. Balance minerals in the blood (sodium, potassium, magnesium, etc.)

3. Direct production of red blood cells

4. Activate vitamin D

5. Regulate fluid levels

6. Regulate blood pressure

7. Produce urine

How do the Kidneys Regulate my Blood Pressure?

Did you know that 1 in 5 adults with Hypertension have Chronic Kidney Disease?

When the blood vessels that supply the kidneys with blood are compromised, the kidneys cannot function properly and become damaged. This damage further hinders the kidney’s ability to filter and function properly, which leads to this vicious cycle. High blood pressure causes kidney damage and kidney damage causes high blood pressure.

Additionally, some patients experience difficulties balancing their sodium and fluid. Extra fluid volume can lead to increase blood pressure, which, in turn, can damage the kidneys over time.

Welcoming Stacie

I’m originally from New Jersey. I moved to Florida 15 years ago. I was previously a firefighter/medic until I stumbled upon dialysis. I have been a certified clinical hemodialysis technician for the past 7 years. I am confident that my knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for this field make me ideal for this role. I’m eager to combine my knowledge and communication skills to create a positive and beneficial experience for my patients.
