You may ask what Hypertension has to do with kidneys. Hypertension, or High Blood Pressure is actually a cause of chronic kidney disease and vice versa. Leaving a diagnosed High Blood Pressure untreated could lead to heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. Fortunately controlling Hypertension can easily be accomplished by losing excess weight, exercising more, not smoking and cutting down on salt.

When levels of potassium are too high in the body it is called Hyperkalemia. Kidney disease is the most common cause of Hyperkalemia. When the kidneys are damaged or not working properly they have a hard time removing potassium from the body. Too much potassium in the body can lead to irregular heart beat or heart attack.
Proteinuria is when protein appears in the urine. Kidneys function to keep protein in the body. When protein appears in the urine it can indicate that the filters in the kidneys are damaged by disease. This is tested by a urine study.
